After Williams left his position at the Defense Department in late March 1993[5,] he started working as a correspondent for NBC News. The Department of Justice and the Supreme Court are two of the most important topics that he covers for NBC in the news.

In 1991, journalist and activist Michelangelo Signorile was the one who broke the news that Pete was gay. He is currently wedded to his spouse, who goes by the name David L. Gardner MD. Despite the fact that there was a restriction in place at the time prohibiting LGBT people from serving in the military, Secretary Cheney refused to fire Pete despite the pressure from reporters. He also signalled his disagreement to the ban.
